just wondering (as I am on the last jar of rose hip jelly ) how everybodies preserves etc went ??
blackberry whisky was blissful especially for sore throats
blackberry jellies and jams brilliant
I have not opened the beech leaf liquor or the walnuts in red wine but the walnut liquor we had over christmas with the cheese course
I am on my last jar of piccallili and one bottle of chilli sauce left we have enough beetroot chutney for 2 years (thanks mainly to my thinking the extra hot chilli was paprika and dumping a load in so I had to triple the batch to try and slake it down )
sloe gin is lovely as well
freezer mincemeat was hardly touched as were the christmas puds but as we love them on the barbie thats good
the chrismas hampers went down a treat as everyone enjoyed the home produce but even though it was mostly foraged I am afraid it made for very expensive [pressies so next year will cut them down a bit
how did you do ???? |

Oh dear...I still have some Blackberry wine which needs racking again, before bottling.
Didn't find/see any sloe's this year...very short of fruit due to last frosts.
I made 13 jars of raspberry and redcurrant jelly, took all to the UK...hope it was nice as forgot to save one for us to try!
I have just made some Blackberry vinegar cold remedy, but was too late for when I was ill. I have just offered some to Mark has a cold (we think) but he says he's not ill enough yet to give it a go
Chestnuts have been nice with chick peas in curry. Still have loads of them, so will carry on using them. They are incredibly labour intensive!
Just eaten the last of my Butternut squashes, it was going rotten in the garage, so cut off the good bits and had it mashed with carrots (it was nice).
I hope to have more home grown and home produced things, cherries would be good this year, had none last year. Cherry liquer was good the year before, and cherry chutney. We don't really eat jam to make that worth making.
My best home raised product has to be chickens (we ate one this evening, yum) oh and eggs, which are lovely boiled with soldiers. _________________ http://positivechange.myfreeforum.org/index.php

I don't make any wines/liqueurs etc as I don't drink anymore, but I have made loads in the past, I've moved on to apple juice now and made about 250 bottles last year, it should last us till this seasons starts in august, the best of it is all the apples are scrounged from farms I'm working on.
I make jams and jellies of whatever is available ( free preferably) and sell a certain amount. My bees produced 5lbs of honey - not much I know but it was the first so I was more than happy, but non for sale. My chickens keep my household in chicken meat and eggs + surplus egg sales pay for their food.
I've really got to get into growing vegetables, I'm so lazy, I haven't dug the plot Mind you it is underwater at the moment.
On the whole I'm quite pleased with my efforts, but could do more

mm forgot about my cordials how well does the apple juice keep?? I freeze my elderflower in small bottles because it seems to turn so quickly for me other wise and bees I would love bees maybe (think I would love the idea more than the actual doing !!!! we had our first coq au vin with one of our coqs the other week , the neighbour came up and showed rich how to do the deed so we will be sidestepping from chooks for eggs into chooks for meat as well |

You can't beat your own chicken (I don't mean beat as in beat of course )...but our own chickens taste so much better than shop bought one's and you know what they have eaten. _________________ http://positivechange.myfreeforum.org/index.php

It will keep about 3 days if you don't do anything to it Then it will turn itself into cider
I pasteurise it - heat to between 70/80f hold there for 10 minutes, hot bottle & use sealable caps, now it will keep for a year, if it doesn't get drunk in the meantime.
I have a friend who is a cider maker, he also makes juice and orders his bottles by the pallet load, any left over come my way as it is not viable for him to wash them out - once the load is opened then dust and other stuff can contaminate the insides, he also very kindly gives me caps although I do reuse them.
