Sustainable FishJust been reading an article in Olive and thought I would post part of it here. Basically it's a guide to whatt you can eat and what you shouldn't.
Five Fish To Eat
Atlantic cod (organically farmed)
Look for the No Catch brand - widely available in supermarkets.
Alaskan pollock (wild, MSC-certified)
A substitute for cod - and cheaper.
Pacific salmon from Alaska (wild, MSC-certified)
A vivid, pink fish with no white marbling.
Pacific cod (wild, MSC-certified)
Similarly priced to Atlantic cod and found in the freezer section as fillets in this country.
Cornish mackerel (wild, MSC-certified)
Omega-3 with a clear conscience: MSC-certified Thames herring is another oily fish alternative.
Five Fish To Avoid
Atlantic salmon (wild)
Threatened and a decling species.
Atlantic cod (wild)
A declining species' almost everywhere.
Skate and rays
Virtually extinct; all skates and rays are vunerable.
Plaice
Most stocks are over-fished, except those in the Irish Sea.
Tiger prawns (except organically farmed)
Trawled prawns account for a third of all 'bycatch' (accidental nettings, including turtles), while prawn farming destorys mangrove forests.

Tried pollock a few times but wasn't too keen on it. I'm a haddock girl by choice!

I like haddock too...
I bought fish fingers the other week and only noticed when I was getting them out of the box that they were pollock and not cod!

Someone told me sometime back, that pacific Salmon was much nicer than the farmed stuff. I still manage to buy that here, and we have it now and again...I think it has gone up in price since I first started buying it here though.
