I realised recently that I have been struggling with some of our knives. I've noticed that I hold them too far down the handle, so end up with some blade in my hand. Being left handed, I assumed it was probably that...then I realised that big knives are made for big hands, and for me to get the balance of the knife correct, I had no choice but to hold it further down.

Ellie, my daughter in law also bought me a small cook's knife for my birthday (not sure if the cook needs to be small, or the knife

)

It's brilliant and I find I can chop food far quicker...(I do have to watch my fingers though!!)

I also have a small egg whisk, again, I find this far easier and efficient.

So, maybe you have small hands, and this will help. I know in future, when looking for utensils, I will definitely buy smaller.

Good point. Although I think being left handed also contributes-Brian is left handed too, and he holds knives in a very odd fashion-and he has large hands!

Being left handed always makes life harder, and we left handers end up having to adapt, and that looks odd to onlookers who are right handed.

I discovered the other day, that bread knives often have only one edge on their serrated edge. Thus, as a left handed, we cannot get the loaf straight. I actually do a good job, despite this...but remember my mum always blaming me for the crooked loaf.

One thing which amuses me with Brian, is that he'll set the place setting back to front, reversing the knife and fork-and then when eating reverse them back!

Poor Brian, I know exactly how he feels and why that is.

When we were children, we understood that we were left handed, and therefore believed that we also ate with our left hands. It sounds like Brian, like I, actually eats as a right handed person does, but as he assumes he is "left handed", he sets the table with everyone else opposite.

both my right handed daughters do loads of things left handed

thanks to me (yes a south paw!) even eating , when I used to show them how to do something (say knitting ) I would do it in a mirror but they quickly grasped the right/left difference and both of them are ambidexes !!!!

I am ambidextrous. I eat my main meal right handed, and my dessert and soup with my left hand. Don't often play backhand when playing racket games, just throw the racquet across to the right or left hand
