Rick Stein's St Petrocs Bistro, Padstow

We were very tempted to visit the main Seafood Restaurant during our stay in nearby Rock but decided against it due to the prices being slightly inflated (it would have cost close to £150 for a 3 course meal with half a litre of wine!!) so we settled for Rick Stein's less formal, more pocket friendly bistro.

We arrived at 7.30pm to have our coats whisked away and to be shown to our little table. The place is very rustic. Split into 3/4 different rooms, the tables are all big and wooden with arty modern pictures of the area all over the walls. I thought we'd feel a little out of place but it was unpretentious somehow. There was a basket of warm bread and perfectly spreadable butter awaiting our arrival. White ciabatta or a sweet walnut. Very good... and almost spoiled our starters!

Chris went for the squid starter which was ridiculously fresh whilst I opted for the prawn cocktail. The prawns, too, were really juicy and fresh. The salad had a bit more oomph than the normal lettuce too with some spring onion and chili.

For mains I had the rib eye steak with bearnaise sauce. Cooked exactly as I wanted and a surprisingly large portion I might add! Chris went for the Lemon Sole which was so tender it fell off the bone. The only complaint was that he ordered a side dish of chips which never came but I got so many that we shared.

For dessert I had Paris Brest (choux bun with praline and chocolate) which was stunning and the best dessert I have ever tasted. That is saying a lot with my sweet tooth! Chris had the passion fruit pavlova which was chewy and beautifully light.

Including half a bottle of Muscadet, a large glass of Rose and a coke it came to £80.... I was expecting a lot more! It was stunning and I would recommend anyone going to Cornwall to give it a try.

That sounds lovely, will have to remember that if I ever pop down to Cornwall.

Great review Keeley! :D

We also avoided his main restaurant, but would have visited the bistro had time allowed.

My only reservation is that he really seems to have taken Padstow over-he even owns a couple of the fish and chip shops!

I have never been to the bistro but my daughter goes and has never had a bad meal there and always says how beautifully the food is cooked and served.

Sounds lovely and not a bad price considering it's a Stein place. We call Padstow, Padstein, as he does own quite a bit of it now.

Oh and yes, I agree with Jo...good review.

He seems to have brought a lot of tourism to the village. Obviously it is a bit 'overload' with a Fish and Chip shop, Restaurant, Bistro, Cafe, Patisserie, 2 hotels and a B&B not to forget the cooking school but how many people would visit otherwise? I'm not so sure. The locals seem happy about it anyway

As you said Keeley, he's brought in a lot of tourists-but then it was always quite a popular holiday destination. It's still a lovely little village though, but I'm not sure I'd want to be there in the middle of summer!
