My intolerances...

I took the York test last year (quite expensive!) and they told me I was intolerant to Kiwi Fruit and had slight reactions to some fish and yeast. I have since eaten Kiwi and I totally agree with them, even a small piece did me in when I was at Center Parcs...

I also have a reaction to raw tomatoes, which I really hate because I love tomatoes. I do eat them at home sometimes though.

Oh and I have IBS... mine is mainly stress related, but the above foods effect it too sometimes.

Poor you Jo. My friend's little boy is allergic to loads of stuff (he has eczema). She discovered he was allergic to kiwi fruit when he was one, a year or so ago. His face puffed up and turned a funny colour. He was fine after being checked in at A&E. My friend has to cook everything organic and has to use egg, wheat etc. substitutes. She is forever in the kitchen experimenting. I've told her to publish her recipes to help others in her position as there are few books she can refer to.

Unfortuantely my food intolerances are to two of the most commmon-namely wheat and dairy. This makes life challenging as it rules out so many foodstuffs. No bread, patsa, pastry, cakes, milk -need I continue!?

I'm not keen on the substitutes, with the exception of the pasta, which is fine if smothered in a sauce. I simply do without things like bread (use oatcakes instead).I used to long for a snadwich or some toast-but it's not worth it as the symptoms are so uncomfortable. For example, I had half a slice of toast a while back (partly to see if the symptoms had improved) and felt wretched for 36 hours. It's simply not worth it.

Fortunately, the dairy isn't quite so bad, in that I love soya produce, and now shudder if I as much as smell cows milk (it really does smell like cows to me!) I can manage some cheese occasionally, if I take a lactase tablet beforehand. Have to limit the softer cheeses, but manage the firmer ones ok, with lactase-which is as well, because my favorite is shropshire blue!!! Honestly, it is!

By and large I cope ok, and have no problems in baking bread and cakes and cookies for everyone else. Would be nice to sample them on occasions though!

I don't think I'd cope as well as you Elaine... I am slightly intolerant to yeast and even though I could probably do without bread I think I'd find the other stuff difficult.

I tried soya milk once but didn't really like it, although it tasted ok on museli.

Although I have never been diagnosed as actually having any intolerances I do have a rare bowel disorder. I have short bowel syndrome, most of my small intestine went gangerenous when I was 22. I had to have an emergency operation to remove it and was on life support for quite a while.
1 in 100,000 people in the UK have this disorder, and it is very rare that adults suddenly get it - usually children are born with it.

I am in constant pain with it, very similar symptoms as IBS really, lets just say I've had the runs for 18 years!!!!

I've noticed various things make me feel worse - salad and bread products are the worse. Although I do eat a bit of these, I can suffer for it afterwards. I cant absorb fat so have to be careful, also it has caused me to have a salt deficiency so I have to add extra salt and take sodium tablets. I often get funny looks when people see me happily shaking the salt cellar.

I'm a real foodie though, I think the 6 weeks in hospital eating only orange ice cubes made me appreciate food even more. Lots of people have said that they would have thought I would have a real aversion to food, especially as I suffer after I've eaten, but no I love the stuff!

So, my mantra is, a little of what I fancy - it's me that has to pay the price!

My first post! I have IBS too which, appears, to be triggered by my shift work depending on what I eat. Also pork appears to trigger it too. Very strange.

Well fat is the main problem and bread and salad stuff. There is nothing else that I can put my finger on that triggers it all the time. I struggle with pizza have to have only mild curries when I dare. My condition also causes a build up of oxalate which causes kidney stones, so beetroot and nuts have to be limited

My bowel and stomach have been agrivated through years of taking medication for other contidions. I now get the runs when I have coffee, and am affected by ham and pork, and slight dairy. I also have to be careful of rhubarb whch can bring me out in spots. and likewise tomatoes.

one of the twins has ADHD and isn't meant to have colours, sugar, preservatives or alot of milk
It depends on brands as well - she can have bisto gravy but not co-op etc
cooking for her is a nightmare, she's a bit of a picky eater as well which doesn't help
I used to spend hours reading all the ingredients before I bought anything, now I tend to stick to the same things - ALL THE TIME :?

I have crohns disease so and have had three abdominal surgeries and have had a small intestine resection. I have spent years on a diet and now just trying to eat healthy as i have a tendancy to get obsessed and end up in hospital. I like Anne have had runs for 14 years and nothing changes it.

Can't eat some salad stuff and depending on my mood will depend upon the differnet tolerences i have.

Hi, just joined!

I have constantly sneezed and had colds for as long as I can remember (probably since my very early teens). Drove me (and everyone else) crazy, doctor just splurted out usual garb. Last year I finally got sent for allergy tests, and the result was house dust mite allergy. :?

However, since cutting out a lot of carbs and ALL bread since the start of the year, I have discovered that it was probably bread (or at least yeast) all along!! When I did have some fresh bread about 2 months ago, within 15 minutes or so I came down with the heaviest cold I had had in a long time. I have tried eating bread on a few occassions since, and the same happened. It effects me really badly when I eat fresh bread, but not so much when I eat sliced. Do you think it's a yeast thing? My theory was that maybe fresh bread had more yeast in, or the yeast was fresher or something?!! I'm just so relieved that I can now control my sneezing!! And it also comes in handy for when I want to get off work early  :smt005

My problem is migraines. Some (in fact a great many) are stress-related, but some are food-related too. I'd worked out citrus fruits for myself when I was 18, and eliminating them from my diet worked wonders for a few years. Then the migraines got worse again. Eventually I went for allergy testing (cost a bomb), and was told a great string of things to avoid. I've gradually re-introduced many, but there are some things that I still avoid at all costs - namely citrus fruits, cows-milk cheese, and anything that comes from a pig. Avoid most of the time - coffee (which I no longer enjoy anyway), caffeine and chocolate (but do have some of those occasionally).

I used to be so easy to feed, now I'm a pain in the backside q8
