meal ideas for less than £5 for a family of 4poor mans supper
shredded cabbage (amount depends on you)
lardons or a few slices of streaky bacon cut into strips
sliced onion and garlic (again it depends how much you want I use 2 onions)
butter
1/4 can toms or water
boiled potato
fry lardons in a little butter until the fat melts and browns
add onions, garlic and chopped potato
fry until cooked
put in shredded cabbage and a little water or toms (its just to create steam and a little juice) loads of pepper and a few knobs of butter on the top put the lid on and let steam until the cabbage is cooked
if you have a left over sausage or a bit of pepperoni etc you could add that as well
if you are going to make cabbage pie dont cook the cabbage just put it straight into the dish and cover with pastry
if you dont have any bacon or its for a veggie just add a vegetable stock cube to the water (for extra taste)
for cabbage curry just fry the onions with some curry paste

huge bargain last night I bought 2.4 kilos of belly pork for 5.25 euros and cut it into 3 pieces
first I am roasting (a Martin Blunos recipe) and serving with roasted veg
second piece I am roasting after I have rubbed it with a five spice mix put it into a dish with some left over cider 2 star anise chopped up onion and 2 garlic cloves after I have braised it I am going to fry some onions and garlic add the pork and reduce the juice down as a sauce then I am serving it with noodles
3rd piece is in the slow cooker and is a pork and haricot bean paprika casserole
so thats 3 meals for less than 10 euros with the veg and stuff

Maybe we could rename this thread, Lesley's Meal's for less than £5 for a family of 4.
I will see what bargains I can find when I go shopping on Monday
