Jo's 'Buy Local' ChallengeI tend to do most of my shopping in the supermarket, end up with tons of waste and packaging... so from now on I plan on doing all my fresh shopping in veg shops, butchers and bakeries...
I posted a link to a place called The Goods Shed earlier in the week which does all of these so I will venture over there after work one evening and see how I go.
The only things I will get from Tesco is cleaning products, tinned and dried foods and cat stuff...
I will let you know how I get on.

Question... if I bought from the milkman, does that count as buying local?
You can now order your milk delivery online, along with other grocery stuff... I'm thinking of doing it for milk, dairy stuff such as cheese and cream and possibly bread!
Won't do it until someone tells me it's ok?

I think it is a good plan, and is supporting your local community.

I agree. We have used a company called Milk & More and they come around with the "moo" van and deliver the milk (in glass bottles) and anything else you need.
We don't really have a good independent grocer near us, so I order an Able & Cole fruit & veg box once a month. We use the local butcher, who is fantastic and also get a box from Well Hung Meat Company once every 2 months which tops up the freezer.
I love going to little local shops and buying from them, but I have used the big ones like Whole Foods Market in London too, which is an oasis of goodies, but can be expensive.

Ok I have done well today... I think!
I wanted Thai red curry for dinner tonight... so... I got off my bus by the train station in Canterbury where I know there's a butchers and I bought a couple of chicken breasts (£2.50), I reckon they're not free range... will ask next time! Also bought some more mince (1lb), the total came to £4.70... not bad.
Then I went to the Thai shop, it has everything thai... I bought some lemon grass, a huge bag of kaffir lime leaves (I'll never use them all) and some fish sauce and that all came to £3.27 I think.
Popped into the pet shop for some Alfie food, Tesco had run out for my delivery yesterday!
Will try harder in the butchers next time, I was all flustered, I think that was my first ever purchase in one...
Milk being delivered for the first time tomorrow... quite excited!

Hope your milk delivery comes before you go to work. When we lived in Silverton our milkman didn't come till after 10m. One of my jobs was to go around 3 of the neighbours houses while they were at work, pick up their delivery and put in in their fridges. I guess, like the post, someone has to be at the end of the run, but can you imagine what state the dairy produce would have been in by the time they all arrived home? To say nothing of advertising to all and sundry that there was nobody at home.
Hope you enjoy the curry!!

I checked with Jo about what time the milkman comes, and he delivers before work, which is good.
You'll get used to shopping like that, and it is much nicer if you;re not pushed for time, like to catch the bus.
Hope your Thai turns out nicely

Well I hope he comes before work, I'm sure I've seen him early in the mornings around here... if he doesn't then I will have to think again, or just have a delivery on a Saturday!
My Thai is turning out lovely, it smells delicious and I can't wait to eat it... this is the recipe - http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/1788/thai-chicken-curry

It's on the little roundabout that goes to Canterbury West train station, it looks like a petrol station forecourt but it's actually a shop. I had a brief look round and I think it is only Thai food, it has dried stuff, sauces, frozen and fresh stuff... in fact it has everything you need for a Thai meal.
I can't remember the name of it, will look tomorrow...

and... my bloody milk didn't turn up before I left this morning! I wonder how curdled it will be when I get home, the OJ and eggs should be ok, and maybe the cheese I ordered as well.

This was exactly the dilemna our former neighbours were in-wanted to support the service, but was impractical for them to do so without me putting away their goods. Such a shame Jo-maybe he forgot-it can happen with your first order.

Yeah I will have a think over the weekend, if it's not there when I get home mayeb he did forget... next delivery scheduled for Monday, well Tuesday I guess with it being bank holiday.
