IBS - Eliminating Foods

Ok it has got to the point where I need to do something about my IBS... it's been playing up loads recently and seems that everything I eat makes it worse.  I plan on doing the whole elimination diet thing, so cut something out for 7 days and see what happens...

I thought the best way of starting this off is to eliminate something from my York Test I took 2 years ago.  There were some things I had a slight reaction too which they say you should rotate.  So this is the list of them:

Egg White
Plaice
Sole
Salmon
Trout
Yeast

Not many...!!!!  From those I don't really eat the fish on a regular basis to be able to eliminate them, I guess I eat egg white in stuff, and also yeast...

I think I'll start with yeast...

Next question, what can I eat that doesn't contain yeast??  q5

What you'll need to do for a while, is shop slowly and read labels.  I have done that a couple of times in the past, and it slows you up for a few times, until you learn what is in what.

I do not know, but suspect that Pitta bread will have no yeast, and will be a good alternative for lunch.  I often buy them, and make Pitta pockets, fill with salad and stuff.  Nice than a sandwich.  Check out, or look for unleven bread, again Pitta and maybe some others.  Cakes, biscuits etc will have yeast and egg in, so avoid them.  Marmite is yeast extract, so knock that right off your list.

I am sure others will have some ideas.

Well just been to Sainsbury's and the pitta breads have yeast... all the free from foods are free from gluten and wheat, but not yeast.

I bought some corn rice cracker things and some cheese oat cakes, they will have to be my substitute for bread at the mo until I can find something else.

Luckily many of the cereals don't contain yeast... so I have weetabix as I know this tends to be ok.

Going to start a food diary and see how I get on!

I've eliminated wheat and dairy-and voila, little or no ibs. You have to be focused about it though-even now (several years later), I would be very reluctant to have anything which contains wheat, in particular.For some reason, dairy isn't so bad, and there are certain cheeses I can eat, provided I use lactase tablets to couteract the lactose.

Given that wheat and yeast virually go hand in hand..... Firstly I never have bread-the gluten/wheat free is disgusting. I use oatcakes-which I love-as a substitute for sandwiches, having them with either pate or salad.I doubt you'll find a suitable bread substitute-tell me if you do! Consequently a snack meal now for me is a baked potato/soup/oatcakes (not all at once!). Once you're into a routine you'll be fine, although you'll likely have to make up salad for work, or take a flask of soup. Incidentally, I always make my own soup, so have no idea what ready made soups may contain, so best check first.

Mix up a container full of muesli, adding in whatever you like. Make flapjacks if you still crave biscuits/sweet things. You'll likely be ok with hobnobs.

Your list looks quite manageable-no fish, eggs or yeast inclusive produce.I'm surprised though that it's troubling you so much-given that you only had a "slight" reaction to these food groups, it may be that stress is the bigger culprit. But, if you know that you do react to these foods, the it really is in your best interest to omit them-and keep them omitted form your diet. Good luck!

how about soda bread ?? and maybe wraps if so then chappattis def dont have yeast so you could use them good luck

I wasn't very good at keeping up with this... in fact I was rubbish!!

BUT I have found that when I was in France at Mum's my IBS was a lot better.  When I got home I started to eat white toast with jam and my IBS started playing up again, so I have now eliminated that, seems to be working so far... not even taking any tablets!!

I have a new loaf in the freezer, so I might have to feed this to the birds...
