have been on a gluten free dietHave been on a gluten free diet for over 2 and a half weeks. I started off 85% and am now between95 and 99% gluten free.
Am noticed a bit of an improvement in my bowel problems but the biggie is my arthritis which was progressive and terrible, is now great.
I can now walk as well as anyone now. Hubby says my posture is better too and am not kept a wake with pain.
I did find it hard in tescos going near the bread dept, and at times I would love a sandwhich, rice cakes are not the same believe me.
Meanwhile I have found two sorts of bread which I can cope with tosted which lets me enjoy my breakfast which is my fave meal of the day.
I will see how it goes then tell my gp and take it from there. hubby says it is worth it just for the change in my joints.

Sounds like it's really helped Carole... I wish I could go gluten free as I think my IBS problems are somewhat to do with that! Maybe one day I will get round to being brave and giving it up...
Might tell my Dad about the arthiritis though, he has it quite bad... maybe it would help for him!

Hey
would love to know more about your IBS both of you!!!!!
Have just started my new job as volunteer support worker with 'The Gut Trust' - which is the new name for the IBS support network and am learning all about 'poo' and 'shit' and problems surrounding both!
Am also suffering with arthritis in my hands so very interested in the gluten free aspect for that - I didn't realise there was a connection

Sounds like a nice job Hec, hope you don't have to look at poo like Gillian McKeith!
My IBS hasn't been too bad lately, it tends to be worse when I'm stressed but it's mainly bad when I am anxious about not being at home near the toilet. There are some foods I avoid when I'm out, mainly untoasted bread during the day and raw tomatoes... oh and kiwi's which I actually found out I am intolerant too when I took the York Test!
Feel free to ask me any questions...

Wheat and gluten are amongst the biggest culprits with ibs. I haven't had any wheat produce in several years, but knowing that it makes me ill, has meant that doing without is no great sacrifice for me. Admittedly, the smell of it baking is delicious, but a little voice in the back of my head says "stop" very effectively! I couldn't now deliberately eat something which would make me ill.
I still bake for the rest of the family, and manage to avoid temptation relatively easily (by making trays of flapjacks for me!)
You can get gluten free bread/flour, but "it's not the same", although it's ok toasted. As wheat is such a large part of most diets, it's difficult at times, as so much becomes forbidden or needs to be substituted. But as you've already seen, the benefits are huge, and now you've identified (one) of the problems/triggers, then I'm sure it'sll give you the impetus to keep going.
Good luck Carole-keep up the good work.

Oh dear, Helen is not happy with pooing and sh1ting on Positive Change, she has to bring it over to the FOOD forum
Maybe Carole and Jo and anyone else with IBS could go and discuss it on PC too, since there is more to it than just food me thinks

I find the bakery end of tescos so temting. I could simply grab a doughnut and eat it there and then. I still cant feel the same about rice cakes.
I now dont eat biscuits . I know there are some expensive gluten free ones, but to have to find ones you like.
That said I can still eat choccie
If i find a recipe for biscuits I may well just replace the flour and try.
That said it seems to be worth it. My mate Sam told hubby that gluten free helps his arthritis, but he always goes back, tempted by bread!

You'd be fine on oat bicuits and flapjacks. For a quick and easy solution, McVitties hobnobs are also ok.
Most of the gluten free produce (in my opinion )is pretty awful, and bears little resemblance to real bread/cakes. The gluten free pasta is a real find though, and I use it regularly.
(Wonder if i time your body will "know" that the tempting smells will hurt you. It happens with me-it's almost as if warning bells go off in my head, and even if I'm superficially tempted by the smells, the thought of eating it makes me queasy)

Now the weather is colder, if I "need" a sweet type of snack, I like a mug of options hot chocolate. Very tasty-and low in calories too!
