Bulk buying advice?

Ok I am needing to bulk buy some basic food to keep me going while I don't have a job... so far I have:

Big bag of rice
Big bag of pasta
Onions
Potatoes

Can anyone help me out with some other basics?? :D
salt n pepper

if you are doing it on the cheap and have freezer space
go to a supermarket 20 minutes before closing you can normally buy fresh loafs of bread from the bakery.what has been made in the the day before(the bread is fine but only has a two day shelf life)

always shop before you run out and only get stuff whats on offer.for example you will always find shampoo on offer bogof.

never shop on a empty stomach you will only spend more than you need.

stock up on mince .mince is a good base for most meals.

stock up on soup,baked beans

if you buy meat allways make sure you can use again for example sauages what you dont eat have cold or in sandwich.

iceland is good and cheap depending on what you buy

hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice, have been going through all the offers so doing well so far!

Will need to get Dad to take me shopping one evening to try and get the cheap stuff...

Packets of chickpeas, mixed beans , lentils are good to have too.
Chickpeas for hummus or for adding into casseroles/soups.
Mixed beans for a mixed bean salad.
They're all highly nutritious, and filling, so useful on two counts.
I'd add in some cheese-for pasta sauces or for baked potatoes.
Maybe a few packs of bacon offcuts-great again for pasta sauces.

(If your freezer is quite empty, fill plastic containers of water and leave them in it-apparently keeps the running costs down.Haven't tried it myself, but it sounds plausible!)

Thanks Elaine, I have about 3 tins of chickpeas in my cupboard, I bought them with the bright idea of making hummous and I never got round to it... so that's sorted!

My freezer isn't too empty, but I might try the water trick... see what happens!

Stock up on tins of anything you usually eat. I always have tins of tomatoes and beans, not just baked beans but other types too because I use them in chilli and casseroles.

Also, if you see mince on special offer you can buy loads of it and do a big cook up for the freezer: chilli, spag bol sauce, lasagne, shepherds pie etc which you can freeze in portions and use at a later date - this would be a good thing to do now while you are not working and you will have dinners ready for when you are busy when you have a job.

The freezer tip about the water would also work with newspapers or blankets etc. It is about filling up the empty spaces so there is less air for the freezer to cool.

My freezer is packed out now, I've been making stuff like chilli and now I have lots of easy food in there... the big bags of rice and pasta are huge, they will last me forever!!!
