Kathy asked for a recipe earlier, so thought I'd post it here. It's an easy one which I used to use when we lived in Worcester. We had 5 pear trees in the garden, and were swamped by pears!
4lb eating pears
11/2lb soft brown sugar
1lb seedless raisins
2 oranges
1/2 pint white vinegar
1tspoon ground cloves
1tspoon ground cinammon
1tspoon ground allspice
Peel and core pears and chop them. Put pears, sugar raisins, grated orange rind and juice into a pan with the vinegar and spices. Bring to the boil and simmer for 1 hour until thick and golden brown, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking. Put into hot jars, cover and seal.
(Eat with cheese.....)

Not a problem-seem to recall it worked well though, as it was the one I used to regularly use.
